The Pittsburg Penguins are so called because they play ice hockey in the ‘Igloo’: an alternative name for the Mellon Arena. Changing its colours from blue and white to black and gold in 1980, the Pittsburgh Penguins ice hockey club has a colourful history, indeed, characterised by heady days of success as well as tragedy: in 1970 promising rookie Michel Briere was fatally injured in a car crash. As a junior he managed to score 320 points in 100 games and the loss was deeply felt by the Pittsburgh Penguins. Throughout the eighties, the Pittsburgh Penguins ice hockey club suffered from a negative balance both in the bank and on the rink. In 1990, however, a breakthrough came when Czech top player Jaromir Jagr was drafted who, together with Mario Lemieux, was largely responsible for the successes in the nineties and beyond.
