Having its roots in a gymnastics association, the club has a long history which goes back to 1938 when Frölunda joined the Swedish Ice Hockey Association for 75 kronor. In March 1984 after a long financial dispute the Frölunda ice hockey club became independent and separated from VFIF, the board which had originally brought it into being.
